I always feel unsettled when Dr. Robert Jeffress, Pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas, quotes scripture on social media. I wouldn’t find it offensive to hear him read a passage from the pulpit if I didn’t know anything about him.
At least Dr. Jeffress encourages me to read my Bible. I always make it a point to read the text surrounding any scripture he quotes. When I read Jeremiah 29, I found verses 8-9 relevant to my impressions of Dr. Jeffress, who preaches on the side while promoting his books, cruses, and politics.
“Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you… They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” says the Lord.
*Proof texting definition: Using a scripture reference to make a point, theological or political. The text may seem to support the argument until you read it in context with surrounding scripture or the Bible text as a whole.
