Evangelical leader Franklin Graham has asked us to pray for President Trump again. I think that’s a good idea. Graham said, “Pray for President Trump today, for God to give him wisdom, protection, and guide each and every step he takes.” He then posted a t-shirt you can purchase on his website ($15.99=$3 shipping), modeled here by his daughter.
Despite the cognitive dissonance I experience with the idea of praying on behalf of others, I agree with Graham’s emphasis on praying for the president, especially the wisdom part. I’ve prayed this for myself many times with mixed results, knowing the critical part of the answer is that I must be receptive to wise counsel and hang out with wise folks. Sadly, the president hasn’t demonstrated a propensity to do either.
When Graham last appealed for prayer back in June, I wrote a prayer that I could honestly speak. When reviewing it while writing this post, I was surprised that much of it related to seeking wisdom and is relevant to Graham’s current request, so I’ll repeat a portion here and pray it as best I can.
Inspire him to read, listen, and learn….Help him find cabinet members and advisers who are competent, honest, and wise, those who can have a positive influence on his future actions and beliefs about the United States of America. Amen.
I’ll pray for the President, but I’ll pass on the t-shirt. -Kindly
Amen.
